The Oakland University Men's Hockey team participates in the American Collegiate Hockey Association in the Division I ranks. Hockey began at OU in the late 90's with immediate success, winning two ACHA DII National Titles in 2004 and 2006 and capturing the ACHA DI National Title in 2007. The Grizzlies also won the 2011 GLCHL Playoff Championship, The 2012 GLCHL regular season title and finished #2 in the nation in 2012 after playing in the National Championship game. 2012 also saw the Grizzlies win the "Good Luck Duck Series." OU Hockey also has a a second team that works much like a feeder team that participates within the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III system.
Oakland Hockey prides itself in playing only the most elite of competition, including NCAA, CIAU and ACHA opponents. OU competes against Penn State University, Ohio University, University of Illinois, Iowa State University, Grand Valley State University,, Davenport University and other elite teams from around the nation. OU has also competed against NCAA Division I opponents such as Wayne State University.
Oakland University offers a great opportunity for student athletes to compete while earning a degree from a nationally recognized university.
Level of Play: Hockey at OU is played at a very high level. The roster is typically comprised of players who have played NCAA, Junior A, Junior B, AAA and elite high school hockey. ACHA teams have competed well against their NCAA counterparts and in some cases have earned wins against NCAA Division I teams.
Facility and Support: OU plays all their home games at the beautiful ONYX Ice Arena in Rochester, MI, minutes from the OU campus. Home games typically draw anywhere from 300-750 fans a game. The Grizzlies have their own dressing room at the ONYX where players can store all their equipment.
Quality Education: The Princeton Review named Oakland University in its first edition of "The Best Midwestern Colleges, 150 Great Schools to Consider." The book showcases the top schools in 11 states based on academic excellence and student surveys about academics, campus life and the student body. Oakland University appears with Indiana University, Notre Dame, Northwestern, the University of Chicago, University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin.
Oakland University Hockey is a non-varsity program at OU and much like other ACHA programs there is an ice bill associated with playing, typically$1800-$2200 a season.
