Head Coach Jeremy Bachusz


Bachusz continues to keep Oakland as one of the top teams in the nation

Jeremy Bachusz enters his fourth season as Head Coach of the Grizzlies. In his first season as Head Coach, Bachusz led Oakland to an impressive 12 win improvement from the previous season and compiled a record of 25-11-3 with an appearance in the ACHA DI National Tournament. The 25 wins was the most for Oakland at the Division One Level. Bachusz was also named an Assistant Coach for the 2010 and 2011 ACHA DI All-Star Game.

Bachusz led the Grizzlies to the 2011 GLCHL Playoff Championship by defeating Eastern Michigan, regular season champion Adrian and eventual National Champion Davenport.

In his third season Bachusz led the Grizzlies to its first regular season GLCHL championship. The season also saw the Grizzlies win "The Good Luck Duck" over rival Davenport. Bachusz led his team to a 25-16-2 record and the ACHA DI National Championship game and finished the season ranked second in the nation.

He was also named at the 2012 GLCHL Coach-of-the Year.

Bachusz served as assistant coach under the previous Head Coach Sean Hogan for three seasons, where he worked primarily with the forwards and special teams. Bachusz also served as the team's manager last season assisting in travel planning, finances and scheduling. Jeremy brings with him an impressive hockey pedigree and strong playing background. Bachusz played NCAA Division I hockey for Lake Superior State University from 1998-2003, where he both led the team in scoring and served as captain his junior and senior seasons. While at LSSU Bachusz was named the Freshman of the Year his first season and was honored with the Copper Coaches Choice, an award voted on by all the LSSU varsity sports coaches and given out to the LSSU athlete who best displays leadership and exemplary athletic performance.

Prior to his time at Lake Superior State, Bachusz was a heavily recruited and highly touted athlete while playing forthe Compuware Jr. A team in the North American Hockey League. While with the Compuware Ambassadors. Jeremy was named First Team All NAHL in 1997-1998, awarded playoff MVP in 1997-1998 and was also named MVP of the NAHL All Star Game in 1997-1998. While at Compuware Jeremy was also awarded the Barbara Ann Karmanos Award.

After completing his degree at LSSU, Jeremy signed on to play with the Arkansas River Blades and then the Cincinnati Cyclone both of the ECHL. Despite being a rookie in the ECHL, Bachusz was named an Assistant Captain of the Cincinnati Cyclones. In 2004 Jeremy retired as a player and accepted a position with Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor.

Personal: Jeremy currently lives in Royal Oak, MI. Jeremy’s brother Mike was also a captain of Lake Superior State hockey team and won an NCAA Division I National Championship in 1992.

Associate Head Coach Nick Tomczyk

Nick Tomczyk enters his third season at Oakland and his second as Associate Head Coach/recruiting coordinator with the Golden Grizzlies. His responsibilities include player development, video breakdown, game strategies, team travel and bench management, while overseeing the special teams.

Tomczyk comes to Oakland from Utica High School where he served as the team's head coach in 2009-2010, and served as an associate head coach in the 2008-2009 season.

Tomczyk also was an assistant coach with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies U18 and U16 AAA teams from 2006-2008.  He helped produce a number of players that have moved on into junior hockey and college hockey.

Nick's coaching resume also includes head coach at Stevenson High School, where he helped start the program and lead the team to its first winning season.

He is an active member of USA Hockey working with the Coaching Education Program, speaking at a number of different coaching clinics.

Tomczyk played college hockey for Northern Michigan University’s ACHA DII team and served as the team manager for NMU's NCAA team for four years. 

Personal: Nick (31) earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health/physical education from Northern Michigan University in 2004. He went on to receive his Masters degree in Principalship Administration from Saginaw Valley State University in 2010.  Nick’s wife Kristi was a standout soccer player for Oakland University where she was a two-time Summit League Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Nick and his wife, Kristi, reside in Clinton Township with their two sons, Easton (3) and Colton (2).

Assistant Coach-Strength Trainer Gordie Schaeffler

Gordie Schaeffler enters his eighth season with the Golden Grizzles. Gordie coordinates all off ice strength and conditioning, works with OU Hockey video editing and assists in all aspects of the program. 

Prior to coming to OU, Gordie served as an Associate Coach in 2004-2005 for Ferris State’s ACHA D-II team. Before starting his coaching career Schaeffler played at Ferris State University for the ACHA D-II team from 1999 to 2004 where he had been an assistant captain since his sophomore year. Schaeffler helped the Bulldogs to a third place finish in the 2000-2001 ACHA D-II National Tournament. In his final year coaching at FSU, he led the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish at the 2004 GMHL Play-offs against the Golden Grizzlies.

Schaeffler Played in the first game in Oakland University hockey history as a freshmen playing for Ferris State University’s ACHA team.
 
Personal: Gordie (30) graduated from Ferris State University with a Bachelor degree in Business and a major in Public Relations in 2004. He is the Head Hockey Instructor at Total Performance Sports Training Center in Wixom, Michigan. Gordie resides in Royal Oak, MI.

Assistant Coach Will McMahon

Will McMahon enters his third season with the Golden Grizzlies and his first as an Assistant Coach after spending the previous two seasons as General Manager.

While a player with Oakland McMahon scored 238 Goals and recorded 380 points during his career. He also won three National Championships (2004, 2006 DII, 2007 DI) while being named ACHA DII Player of the Year three times and once as the ACHA DI National Player of the year. McMahon was named National Tournament MVP in 2004 (DII) and 2007 (DI) and the Grizzlies team MVP four times.

McMahon was inducted into the ACHA Hall of Fame in 2010.

Personal: McMahon currently resides in Shelby Twp, MI and graduated from OU with a bachelors in accounting. McMahon works at Baker Tilly, a mid-west regional accounting firm, and specializes in assurance for the construction and real estate industries. McMahon is currently has his CPA license.

Grizzles Hockey Operations Staff

Director of Player Personnel Corey Hagood

Corey Hagood is entering his eighth season with the OU Hockey team. Hagood fills many roles for OU Hockey from directing all game day activities, to assigning volunteer score keepers, public address announcers, and game night dj's. Hagood also assists with OU Hockey video editing ensuring all games are taped and distributed to the coaching staff

You can also hear Corey as the play by play announcer for all OU Hockey games. Corey has broadcast the 2005 and 2006 ACHA DII National Tournaments as well as the 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 ACHA DI National Tournaments including the 2007 and 2012 National Championship games featuring Oakland. He has covered the Plymouth Whalers Championship in the 2007 OHL Finals and the 2008 NHL Draft in Ottawa.

He also broadcast the 2011 NAPHL Top Prospects Tournament. Corey writes, compiles and calculates all OU Hockey statistics for the Gameday Sheets and contributes many of the articles you can find at www.oaklandhockey.org. He is also a staff member for the GLCHL Conference updating and contributing articles to the GLCHL Conference website.

He also contributes articles to The Oakland Press for Oakland University Hockey.

Assistant Director of Player Personnel Carl Arndt

Carl Arndt enters his fourth season as the Golden Grizzly Color Commentator and Statistician. He can be heard broadcasting all of the team's home games.

Arndt also compiles a list of information for the Oakland coaching staff including shots on goal, goals, assists, turnovers, faceoffs, and plus/minus.

Arndt also covered the 2008 NHL draft from Ottawa with fellow analyst Corey Hagood. He had the ability to interview Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland, Assistant GM Jim Nill, and goalie prospect Thomas McCollum. Arndt also helps write and update the OU Hockey Game notes and breaks down Oaklands and opponents Power Play and Penalty Kill statistics.

 

Trainer Larry Vandeberghe

Larry Vandeberghe enters his second season with OU. Larry serves as the teams trainer.

Equipment Manager Charles Williams

Charles Williams enters his first season at Oakland serving as the Equipment Manager.
